Introduction to Resins and Liners

In the pipe renovation industry, resins and liners are critical components used with UV curing equipment to repair and reinforce aging or damaged pipelines. This innovative technology ensures efficient, durable, and environmentally friendly solutions for a variety of applications, from residential to industrial settings.

Types of Liners

Felt Liners:These are impregnated with different types of UV LED resins and inverted into the pipe using air. Felt liners are commonly used for smaller diameter pipes (up to 200 mm although 300 mm is also not unfrequent) and offer a cost-effective solution for residential and commercial pipe repairs. Felt liners are impregnated at the job site (or even at the shop in advance) and inverted into the pipe typically using an inversion drum and an air compressor that will keep the liner inflated during curing ensuring a tight fit of the liner to the pipe. These liners are ideal for horizontal and vertical pipes and when there are bends present.

Glass invertible liners: These are glass liners built to obtain higher structural resistance. Just like felt liners they can be impregnated at the shop or at the job site (in some cases they come already pre-impregnated from the factory). They are also inverted into the pipe using an inversion drum and an air compressor. Also compatible for horizontal and vertical pipes with bends present.

Glass-Fiber Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) Liners: Known for their strength and durability, GFRP liners are ideal for larger-diameter pipes and areas requiring high structural integrity. They are impregnated with a UP unsaturated polyester resin and cured using UV light, creating a robust and long-lasting repair. GFRP liners are pulled inside the pipe using an air compressor that will also hold the liner in place during the curing process.

Types of Resins

There is a variety of UV LED resins compatible with Sewertronics equipment. Compatibility of UV LED resins with Sewertronics equipment resides in the existence of initiators that react in the presence of our UV radiation wavelength of 400 nm.

Different types of UV LED resins exist currently in the market, each of which presents certain particularities regarding curing speeds, bonding to the pipe, chemical behaviour and others.

The most common resins used with felt liners are VE (Vynil Ester) and derivatives such as MA (methacrylate) always styrene-free. An unsaturated polyester resin with styrene (UP) is typically used for GRP liners.

UV Curing Technology

UV curing technology plays a vital role in the pipe renovation process. The key benefits include:

Speed: UV curing significantly reduces curing times compared to traditional methods, allowing for faster project completion and minimal disruption.

Efficiency: The UV light initiates an exothermic reaction that cures the epoxy resin evenly and thoroughly, ensuring a high-quality, durable repair.

Safety: UV curing produces less heat and no harmful emissions, making it a safer option for both workers and the environment.

Precision: The controlled application of UV light allows for precise curing, ensuring optimal performance of the resin and liner.

Epoxy resins and liners, combined with UV curing technology, provide a powerful solution for the pipe renovation industry. These materials and methods ensure efficient, durable, and eco-friendly repairs, extending the lifespan of pipelines and enhancing their performance. Whether dealing with residential plumbing or large-scale industrial pipelines, the right combination of epoxy resin and liner can meet the specific demands of any project.
